Homework
Responsibility

 

Teachers:

  1. Assign homework that is meaningful and useful.
  2. Allow time for students' questions to clarify directions.
  3. Respond to each assignment by a grade and or comment within a reasonable length of time.
  4. Provide opportunities for both short-term and long-term assignments.
  5. Monitor long-term assignments in order to avoid last-minute student efforts.
  6. Limit assigning homework over school vacations.
  7. Inform parents of their role in checking, correcting and monitoring homework.
  8. Communicate with student and parent when problems concerning homework arise.

Students:

  1. Record homework directions in an assignment book (Grades 3-5).
  2. Make sure directions are clearly understood before leaving school.
  3. Ask questions when necessary to clarify an assignment.
  4. Accept responsibility for completing assignments and keeping materials in order.
  5. Submit neat, accurate and thoughtful work on time.
  6. Plan time for completion of long-term assignments.
  7. Bring home and return appropriate materials.
  8. Complete homework assignment to the best of his or her ability.
  9. Maintain an appropriate study environment.
  10. If materials are misplaced or forgotten, find a way to complete the assignment.

Parents:

  1. Provide a suitable place for study.
  2. Establish a consistent study time.
  3. Check student assignment notebook when appropriate.
  1. Oversee long-term assignments and assist student in learning to budget time accordingly.
  2. Encourage student to accept responsibility for finishing homework assignments.
  3. Help student but not do the work for him or her.
  4. Recognize that homework is not limited to written assignments but includes studying, reading and or researching.
  5. Contact teacher if concerned about homework assignments or child's approach to them. Use judgment in postponing completion if child is overly frustrated.
  6. Clarify with the teacher the teacher’s definition of the kind and amount of parental involvement expected.
  7. Limit after-school activities to allow time for both homework and family activities.
  8. Monitor television viewing and computer time and establish a specific homework time.
  9. Send a note for any extenuating circumstances explaining why child could not complete assignment.
